Landed Estate Sale Catalogue, Inishowen 1879 – Carndonagh, Clonmany, Ballyliffin and Buncrana

In 1879, several thousand acres of land were offered for sale to tenants in West Inishowen. The lots below contain interesting maps of the estates and townlands that were listed in the catalogue. This is an important document in the history of Donegal landed estates, as tenants who bought land in this sale avoided involvement in the Land War of the next decade.  There is also very interesting information about the townlands and their special features contained in the catalogue,. This is an essential resource for genealogy studies in these areas. Click on the images so that they open to full screen.

  1. Thank you so much for going to the effort of sharing these here so that we can have a good look. It is not always easy to find documents like this catalogue and so to have them generously shared is brilliant. I have even caught a glimpse of Tirhoran where my own family came from and still live.

Thanks for uploading these Sean. They look very interesting, although I can’t quite read the small print and I don’t seem to be able to find a way of zooming in. Is that just me and my laptop? I note that the sale in the same year the John Pitt Kennedy died. Did he have a hand in organising it?
